Movie Review: Himesh Reshammiya's Radio

himesh-

Say what his staunchest critics may, but this wannabe actor just refuses to throw in the towel. Himesh Reshammiya , doubtlessly a good music composer and now a better singer (sans his nasal twang), returns once again to the big screen in director Ishaan Trivedi’s film Radio which has him playing an RJ who solves other people’s love problems without getting rid of his own.

Vivaan (Himesh) is an upwardly mobile RJ until his life is rocked by a divorce from wife Pooja (Sonal Sehgal) whom he can’t seem to live with or without. His faith in relationships shaken and his heartache still not fully nursed, Vivaan lands into further confusion with the coming of Shanaya (Shenaz Treasurywala) who brings cheer, and complications, to the brooding RJ’s life.

Is Vivaan rediscovering love in Shanaya? Or does his heart still throb for his ex wife who, by the way, continues to remain his friend after divorce? The matters of Vivaan’s heart are complicated.

Director Ishaan Trivedi tells the story in different chapters and that pretty much sums up the novelty one is likely to see in ‘Radio’. The film’s weakness lies in its inability to make a viewer relate to the love triangle, or tangle. The ‘incompatibility’ because of which Vivaan and Pooja decide to part ways isn’t established convincingly, nor is crackling the chemistry between him and Shanaya.

Himesh seems to be trying too hard to cement his footing as an actor because the effort he makes to get his act right in ‘Radio’ is quite apparent in his performance. Sonal Sehgal is pretty and gets some expressions right. Shenaz is a breeze of fresh air that gets too bubbly for the good of her own character after a while. Paresh Rawal is wasted in an over-the-top guest appearance.

With its soulful tunes, average performances, mangled story and wry humour, ‘Radio’ could turn out to be a delight for Himesh’s loyal fans, and distress for the others.

Rating: 4/10
