Bollywood might have given them a thumbs up, but the reel turban-ators aren’t going down too well with their real brothers. Rani Mukherji’s Sikh avatar in the upcoming film Dil Bole Hadippa is the latest victim of the Sikh ire, after Akshay Kumar in Singh Is Kinng and Saif Ali Khan in Love Aaj Kal.
The Sikhs are annoyed with Rani’s character in the film donning a patka instead of a pagdi, "since she plays an adult Sikh who should ideally wear a turban". They are also complaining the use of a patka sign in place of a dot on letter ’I’ in the title word Hadippa.
Interestingly, the Punjabi Cultural and Heritage Board which has raised this new furore, was the one behind Saif’s beard trouble in Love Aaj Kal . Board chief Charan Singh Sapra met with the film’s producer Yash Chopra to discuss the matter.
When contacted, Yash Raj Films’ spokesperson said, "All concerns have been suitably addressed to the Board’s satisfaction and as assured, necessary action will be taken."While the social bodies are indignant, Sikh community remains unperturbed.
Says student Parminder Chatwal, "It could be a publicity stunt for the film or a way to enjoy private screening by some. People like us don’t care about beards and turbans.
